Update: Dominion Energy confirmed to Chapelboro the gas leak had been closed at 4 p.m.

A portion of West Rosemary Street is closed to traffic Thursday afternoon due to a gas leak.

Chapel Hill Fire Department said the section of West Rosemary between Columbia Street and Church Street is closed for a gas leak. The Town of Chapel Hill is asking the community to avoid the area.

According to town staff, a construction crew hit a power line and no injuries are reported. Dominion Energy is at the scene.

A spokesperson for Dominion Energy said evacuations will likely occur as the repair crew will need to break through the asphalt to secure the gas flow.

This area includes several downtown establishments like the AC Marriott Hotel, La Residence and He’s Not Here.

The portion of W. Rosemary Street between Church Street and Columbia Street closed for a reported gas leak.

Cars parked in the 140 West parking lot were unable to leave until 4:35 p.m. as Dominion Energy’s work to cap the gas leak was near the parking deck entrance. The Downtown Partnership said those who were parked and unable to leave the deck will not be charged parking fees. Town staff said drivers will not be able to return to the 140 West lot to park overnight.

The closure may last into the early evening according to town staff.
