UPDATE: North Estes Drive reopened to all traffic shortly before 8 p.m. on Wednesday, according to Chapel Hill Fire.
The Chapel Hill Fire Department responded to a gas leak on Wednesday evening and closed a key road to prevent traffic from traveling through the area until gas is stopped.
An alert from the fire department and town government shortly before 7 p.m. confirmed firefighters responded and confirmed a report of a gas leak along North Estes Drive just after 6 p.m. on Wednesday. The east-west running road is closed between Halifax Road and Granville Road, a neighborhood area between the Chapel Hill Public Library and Estes Hills Elementary School.
Chapel Hill said its first responders contacted Enbridge Gas to secure the leak and begin repairs. Until then, road travelers are encouraged to East Franklin Street or Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard to detour around the closure.
This is a developing story.
