Tar Heel Bikes, the UNC campus bikeshare program, will end May 31 of this year with the expiration of its contract, UNC announced last week.

Since October of 2017, when the program was first introduced to campus, Tar Heel Bikes enrolled upward of 13,000 members who took more than 140,000 trips on the Carolina blue bikes.

However, plans to move away from the Tar Heel Bikes program have been in place since last year, with the towns of Chapel Hill and Carrboro and the UNC campus envisioning a program which encompasses all three areas.

“The University is in the process of selecting a new bikeshare provider and plans to announce a new service this fall with an electric-assist bike fleet,” UNC said in a release.

Electric-assist bicycles, or “e-bikes,” were a priority of the prospective new bikeshare program, according to Carrboro Transportation Manager Zachary Hallock. Potential hubs around the community include the Orange County Public Library, the Carrboro Town Hall, and the 203 Project, with a goal of at least 100 bikes being available at all times.
