It’s not quite yet Valentine’s Day, but some social media users in Orange County were swooning over an impressive swine this weekend.
The Orange County Animal Services department shared a Facebook post on Friday asking for the public’s help in finding the owner of a pig loose in Efland — the western part of Orange County. According to Tenille Fox, the communications specialist for the department, an Orange County resident called animal control on Friday after finding the pig in their yard. The hog did not display any aggression or present any threat either to the resident or Animal Services’ officers upon arrival, according to Fox. The animal, however, proved to be elusive and was not captured until Monday.
While the social media post asked for help identifying an owner, Fox said the previous caretaker of the pig was recently identified — but they are unable to continue caring for the animal. She said it’s relatively common for Orange County Animal Services to deal with pigs and temporarily keep them at the shelter, with many cases stemming from the animals growing to a size untenable for their owners. Instead, the county department will aim to find a long-term solution for the pig through community partners.
According to Fox, the county’s Medical Director and veterinarian confirmed the animal is a pot-bellied pig, which are small as babies but can grow to weigh up to hundreds of pounds.
A photo of the big, white and hairy animal caught the attention of many, with some in the comments calling the pig “adorable,” “cutie” and “one happy dude.” Others drew comparisons to friends, family members or ex-boyfriends.
If a wild or unusual animal is spotted in a space potentially harmful for the creature, Orange County Animal Services suggests calling the department at 919-942-7387 before contacting any emergency services.
