UPDATE: At 9 p.m., the Orange County Sheriff’s Office reported that Nicholas King was back in custody. He was caught around U.S. 70 and North Carolina Highway 86.

The Orange County Sheriff’s Office is searching for a man in handcuffs around Hillsborough on Monday evening, whom the county government describes as “dangerous” after escaping from a patrol vehicle.

An alert message was sent out by the county government to residents in Hillsborough signed up for the OC Alerts service just before 7 p.m. warning them of a handcuffed man on the loose. After 8 p.m., the sheriff’s office issued a media release saying authorities are seeking Nicholas King. The release detailed that King was initially detained in a domestic assault investigation earlier on Monday and while en route to the county’s detention center, he escaped from the authorities.

King is described as a white male with short, faded haircut and a beard. He was last seen wearing ripped, red jeans and an aqua-colored shirt, according to the sheriff’s office. Authorities said King’s hands were fastened behind his back by the handcuffs and he is expected to be traveling on foot.

The Orange County Sheriff’s Office said King faces charges including assault on a female and second-degree kidnapping.

If seen, authorities encourage community members to not approach King. Instead, the sheriff’s office advises them to call 911 and report his location.
