A residential neighborhood in Chapel Hill was evacuated Monday morning due to a gas leak.

The Chapel Hill Fire Department shared a message with the community shortly after 10:15 a.m. saying it was on-scene at Pritchard Avenue Extension, where a gas company was working to stop the leak. Authorities closed the stretch of road from Longview Street to Umstead Drive for nearly an hour as the repairs were completed.

The fire department’s message said the University Gardens Condominiums on Hillsborough Street and other nearby residences were evacuated due to the leak.

The Chapel Hill Fire Department alerted the community of the repair at 11:20 a.m.
