The Chapel Hill Police Department is asking community members to donate any unwanted cellphones to the station so they can be used for 911 phones.

The department posted the message on its Facebook and Twitter page Thursday, asking for functional cellphones to be given to the police’s Crisis Unit. Chapel Hill Police give the phones to victims of domestic violence and urban-outdoor communities as emergency methods to call for help. The department’s supply is running low and it is looking to restock.

The police said there’s no calling or data plan associated with the 911 phones and previous users’ information is entirely deleted from the phone before given as a 911 phone.

Donations of cellphones can be made at the Chapel Hill Police Department at 828 Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard in Chapel Hill.
