The Chapel Hill Fire Department responded Tuesday evening to a fire alarm at the Berkshire Chapel Hill Apartments on Elliott Road.

According to the press release, a resident was cooking when grease in a pot on the stove ignited. The fire triggered the sprinkler system and automatic fire alarm at 5:22 p.m.

The resident was treated at the scene by Orange County EMS.

The response consisted of 11 fire personnel from Chapel Hill on two Engines, one Ladder, and two Battalion Chiefs. Chapel Hill Police assisted with scene safety and security.

The Chapel Hill Fire Department said, in the event of a kitchen fire, if a pot’s contents catch fire, put a lid on it if it is safe to do so – the lack of oxygen will smother the fire. Additionally, do not throw water on a grease fire.
