Tuesday afternoon, the Chapel Hill Fire Department responded to a bus fire at the Chapel Hill – Carrboro YMCA on Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard.
Aubrey Vinson, the Associate Executive Director at the local YMCA, said the fire resulted from a “mechanical issue” on one of the buses that ultimately led to an engine fire.
Vinson said no children were on the bus when the first signs of mechanical failure arose. Chapel Hill Fire confirmed that there are no related injuries or exposure.
The cause of the fire is currently under investigation by the Fire Marshal’s office.
“It is possible that our Rides Out will be relocated to the front of the branch this afternoon while our transportation teams work to assess the affected bus,” Vinson said Tuesday. “Be assured we are treating this matter with the utmost concern.”
