UPDATE: A spokesperson for the Chapel Hill Fire Department told Chapelboro with the gas leak capped, firefighters and other emergency responders were departing the area and reopening roads shortly after 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday.
Below is the initial story about the gas leak.
The Chapel Hill Fire Department warned residents and road-users in the Timberlyne neighborhood Wednesday afternoon of an ongoing gas leak.
The department shared an alert on social media, saying at 4:39 p.m. firefighters were responding to a gas leak at Butternut Drive and Pitch Pine Lane. The roads are off Kingston Drive, which runs south of Weaver Dairy Road and the Timberlyne shopping center. Emergency responders said residential streets around the intersection “are temporarily closed” amid a response by Enbridge Gas, which services the lines.
Enbridge Gas confirmed to Chapelboro the gas leak occurred when a third party damaged a natural gas line in the area. Gas to the area was turned off shortly before 5:20 p.m. and the company’s crews are working on repairing the line.
Chapel Hill Fire said its firefighters are working to reopen the area “as quickly and safely as possible.”
