Skaters and others looking for a new challenge around Pittsboro may not have much longer to wait for the town’s skate park to open.
The local government’s park department shared photos of the skate park at McClenahan Street Park on its Facebook page in mid-February, with Pittsboro Mayor Kyle Shipp confirming to 97.9 The Hill on Feb. 25 that the project is progressing well.
“The skate park construction contractor is nearing the end of their work, so most of the concrete is in place at this point,” Shipp said. “Once they’re complete [with that stage,] there will be some other landscaping, lighting, and things like that [the town] needs to do before we open it up. But it’s really exciting to go by there and see the progress…it’s been a long-term project from a fundraising perspective, but it will actually be open here in a few months.”

The project — which is the result of sustained advocacy from the local skating community for a dedicated and safe space — started construction roughly four months ago. Located at the edge of the park between the basketball courts and Chatham County Sheriff’s Office parking lot, the park will feature a central ramp and rail in the middle of a concrete bowl with quarter pipe edges once complete.
Shipp said while he is not a skater himself, he is looking forward to people having the recreation option and thinks the final design will lead to town amenity getting plenty of action.
“As part of the planning for this,” he said, “we did visit a lot of other skate parks, and I was always surprised and impressed with the amount of users and the variety of users all throughout the day. We’re just really excited to have this going and to cheer on those who use skateboards and other wheeled things.”
