Ahead of the coldest temperatures and wind chill expected in central North Carolina so far in 2024, the Orange County Schools district called a delay for Wednesday morning.
The district issued a message to families shortly before 5 p.m. on Tuesday, citing the adverse weather as reasoning for a three-hour delay.
“Daylight and rising temperatures will allow time for improved road conditions, ensuring warmer schools, and increased safety for students as they wait for buses,” said Orange County Schools’ Chief Public Information Officer Kevin Smith in the alert.
Despite the delay, the district will continue to make breakfast and lunch at every school to every student.
The frigid temperatures will arrive on the heels of a cold, rainy day on Tuesday in the Triangle — including Orange County. The National Weather Service’s Raleigh office forecasted an “arctic air mass” moving into the area overnight following the storm, which will drop temperatures well below freezing and add steady winds that are expected to last through Wednesday morning. The NWS office’s full weekly weather briefing for central North Carolina can be watched below.
Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools, meanwhile, is on track for normal operations on Wednesday according to the district’s leadership.
