Halftime entertainment at the Dean Smith Center for UNC men’s basketball games can feature all kinds of acts, performance or recognitions. On Sunday, though, the on-court break took time for a particularly local honor.

Representatives for each school in the Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools district walked out to be cheered on by the crowd and thanked by the university during the halftime break. Principals, assistant principals, and educators gathered at center court to see their names displayed on the Dean Dome’s video boards and hear the PA thank them over the loud speakers for their efforts leading the area schools.

Here are the principals and leaders whose names were displayed on the video board:

  • Jennifer Halsey (Carrboro Elementary School)
  • Stacie Boyer (Ephesus Elementary School)
  • Pam McCann (Estes Hills Elementary School)

CHCCS Chief Communications Officer Andy Jenks told Chapelboro the district and university discussed ways to honor its educators since National Principals Month was held in October. Initially, there were plans to simply offer tickets to the game between Carolina and James Madison, but the idea bloomed into also honoring the school leaders at halftime.

“We are so appreciative of our relationship with the University for embracing the idea of honoring school principals [along with assistant principals and teacher-leaders] in such a unique and special way,” said Jenks. “There were a lot of lifelong Tar Heel fans in our group, and they’ll never forget the feeling of standing at mid-court in front of a packed house!”

In addition to the halftime ceremony, the CHCCS leaders were treated to a good basketball game. UNC ultimately beat James Madison 80-64 to improve to 4-0 on the season.
