A former UNC professor and Chapel Hill Town Council member has died.

David Godschalk passed away on January 27, according to a post on the UNC Department of City and Regional Planning’s Facebook page.

Godschalk was affiliated with the university for nearly 40 years, according to the post. Godschalk also served on the Chapel Hill Town Council in the 1980s.

Godschalk “influenced generations of planners and academics and received the highest honors in the field,” according to the department’s post on social media.

Department officials said during his tenure at UNC, Godschalk received the ACSP Distinguished Educator Award and the APA President’s Award, some of the highest honors in the planning field.

A memorial service will be held February 17 at Carol Woods in Chapel Hill.

Godschalk was 86.
