Former Orange County Commissioner Norm Gustaveson has died.
Family members say Gustaveson died on Friday at Carol Woods Retirement Community.
Gustaveson served as the secretary of the Campus Y at UNC from 1964 through 1976 and was the faculty advisor to the UNC chapter of Students for a Democratic Society during the Speaker Ban controversy.
For his contributions to the university, Gustaveson was nominated as a member of the honorary society, Order of the Golden Fleece.
Gustaveson was on the Orange County Board of Commissioners from 1974-1982.
Gustaveson was a charter board member of the Triangle Land Conservancy in addition to being a part of the Eno River Association.
Norm is survived by his wife, Nancy, sons Eric and Mark and daughter Amy along with seven grandchildren.
A celebration of life service will be held at two o’clock the afternoon of Sunday, February 28, at the Carol Wood’s Assembly Hall with a reception to follow.
In lieu of flowers, donations many be made to the Eno River Association or the Triangle Land Conservancy.
Gustaveson was 85.
