Equality North Carolina recently appointed Carrboro Town Council member Eliazar Posada as permanent Executive Director, effective August 1, for his ability to bring the statewide advocacy group to the forefront of the fight for LGBTQ+ rights.
Posada began work as Interim Executive Director in January, and has since exhibited exceptional leadership, vision, and dedication to ENC’s mission, according to a statement released on Thursday.
“I am honored and excited to take on the role of Executive Director at Equality NC,” Posada said in the release. “I look forward to continuing to work with our dedicated team, partners, and supporters to advance our mission and make a meaningful impact in the lives of those we serve.”
Posada also previously served as Organizing Director at ENC, and the statement applauded his ability to bring a wealth of knowledge and experience for addressing community needs in North Carolina.
Before joining ENC, he worked as the Director of Community Engagement and Advocacy for El Centro Hispano, an organization that works to serve and strengthen the Hispanic and Latino community in the Triangle area.
According to the organization, Posada’s efforts as permanent director will focus on strengthening electoral and legislative efforts to amplify community voices, as well as expanding voter outreach, increasing voter turnout, and endorsing candidates who align with ENC’s mission.
Chair of the Board of Directors Milan Pham said North Carolina is fortunate to have a seasoned grassroots organizer and political strategist during a critical time for the LGBTQ+ community.
“With Eliazar at the helm, I am confident that Equality NC will deepen its involvement in endorsing candidates in down-ballot races that matter most to our community, creating lasting, positive changes for LGBTQ+ rights,” she said.
Various statewide and national partners of ENC also expressed support for the decision.
“I am thrilled to see such an energetic young leader take the reins at Equality North Carolina,” Executive Director of Equality Federation Fran Hutchins said. “Eliazar is the right choice to lead this pivotal organization as it continues fighting for all LGBTQ+ North Carolinians.”
