Google is moving one step closer to bringing fiber to Chapel Hill and Carrboro. The company announced Tuesday that construction on its high speed network will be starting soon.

When Google Fiber Business and Operations Director Michael Slinger announced the expansion of Gigabit Internet in January, he said bringing the service to the Triangle would be a long process.

“Building a brand new fiber optic network takes time,” he said. “It’s going to take hundreds of construction crews and hundreds of installers. Their task will be to lay enough fiber to reach from here to London and back.”

The fiber network will stretch from Carrboro to Garner. Once it’s completed, it will offer connection speeds up to 100 times faster than the average broadband connection.

Chapel Hill Mayor Mark Kleinschimdt says this will be a boon for local residents.

“In your living room and in your office, you’re going to be able to have internet service that puts you on par with anybody in the world,” says Kleinschmidt. “Now, Chapel Hill, Raleigh, Durham and the other communities are going to share that advantage.”

Currently three U.S. cities can boast about having Google Fiber: Provo, Utah; Kansas City; and Austin, Texas. Charlotte, Atlanta and Nashville are also included in the expansion.

If Google Fiber is being installed near your yard, technicians will leave a door-hanger at your house alerting you ahead of time.
