Representative David Price of North Carolina’s fourth district said after the speech that he believes the president used “empty words” and failed to address issues many Americans are concerned about. Price, who represents all of Orange County and parts of Wake County in the House of Representatives, released a statement on his government website sharing his views on the president’s policies and actions in office.
“The truth is,” the Democratic representative wrote, “the President is failing to broaden the uneven economic recovery that is leaving too many Americans behind with stagnant wages, rising health care and housing costs, and tax cuts that benefit the wealthy while driving up the national debt. All the while, the President is in court trying to undercut the Affordable Care Act and pull the rug out from people with pre-existing conditions.”
The congressman said Trump’s social media activity also provides more insight into what the president truly believes, as spreading falsehoods and demanding loyalty from Republican lawmakers.
“Simply put: The President has failed to keep his promises and oath of office,” said Price. “Americans deserve better.”
Price also brought a guest to the State of the Union: UNC student and president for the campus’ March for Our Lives contingency Simone Afriyie. While Price pointed out after the speech that Trump failed to acknowledge gun violence, he shared a video before the address talking with Afriyie about her group’s efforts.

Price also tweeted he would wear a pin during the State of the Union to represent his support of addressing climate change and commitment to protecting the environment.
In the past, Representative Price has been critical of Trump’s policies on immigration and Iran, and voted in favor of the president’s impeachment.
