The Chapel Hill Town Council did not hold a vote on a conditional zoning request for the mixed-use Aura Chapel Hill development on Wednesday.
Council members unanimously passed a motion to move the second reading of the Aura project from Wednesday’s agenda to a specially-called business meeting on Monday, June 28.
The decision came one week after a first reading and initial vote on the project by the town council, where the 5-3 result did not achieve two-third majority needed for approval. The next vote on the Aura development will just need a simple majority to pass because it is a second reading of the conditional zoning request.
The high-profile project, which is set to be constructed on 16 acres at the corner of Estes Drive and Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard, aims to build a mix of 419 apartments and townhouses, as well as retail space. The proposed development drew criticism from some nearby residents and praise from some in the business community throughout its public comment process. Many town council members saying during the June 16 meeting they had “mixed feelings” on approving or rejecting the conditional zoning requests.
The Chapel Hill Town Council scheduled the June 28 business meeting following the move of a special use permit request from University Place mall from the June 16 meeting. Also on Monday’s agenda will be considering funding the proposed ReVive Recovery Plan with money from the federal government’s American Rescue Plan.
The specially-called meeting on June 28 is set to begin at 7 p.m. and will be the town council’s final planned meeting before a summer hiatus.
