Despite having said it planned to hold it rain or shine, the Town of Pittsboro has called off its 2023 Christmas parade set for Sunday, December 10. But the town is offering a different way for community members to show off holiday spirit.
A release from the town government on Friday said officials made the decision after consulting with the Pittsboro Police Department, Pittsboro Fire Department and the Town Emergency Management Office. With the forecast for Sunday including high winds, heavy rain, and potentially thunderstorms, local government leaders decided it was best to cancel the event.
“This was a difficult decision,” wrote Pittsboro Public Information Officer Colby Sawyer, “but the safety of our parade participants, spectators, and town staff is of utmost importance. Unfortunately, we cannot reschedule this year’s parade due to logistical challenges. With this in mind, we will refund everyone over the next week.”
On Wednesday, the town government issued an alert saying it intended to have its Christmas parade “regardless of weather,” but that cancellation would be possible if there was “severe weather or unsafe rain conditions.”
Pittsboro’s annual holiday parade often features decorated floats constructed by local organizations and businesses. Because of that hard work, the town government said it wants to offer the option of a “virtual parade” to those who planned to participate in the event or spectate. The town is asking people to send photos of dressed up groups or decorated floats “as if you were going to be in the parade,” and Pittsboro will share the images on social media for a contest. Prizes will include gift baskets, according to Friday’s release.
Photo submissions for the virtual parade are asked to be emailed to parksandrec@pittsboronc.gov by Monday, December 11.
