The Town of Pittsboro alerted residents to a phishing scam Monday evening. The scam is specifically targeting individuals who have worked with the Development Services Department.

According to the Aug. 24 release, scammers are using fraudulent emails to target people who have submitted rezoning and major subdivision applications. The messages are requesting wire transfers for permit application fees.

“The Town of Pittsboro takes the security of its residents, businesses, and applicants seriously and encourages anyone with questions about permit fees or payment requests to contact the Development Services Department directly,” the town’s release read.

According to the release, the only valid online method for paying permit fees to the Town of Pittsboro is through its OpenGov permitting portal. Otherwise people can make payments in person at Pittsboro Town Hall.

Anyone who receives a suspicious email should avoid clicking links or attachments, and should not send any payment to senders. The town also asked recipients to report these emails to the Pittsboro Police Department.

Those looking for more insight into any permit fees they may owe should either log in to their OpenGov portal or contact Department Services through the town’s directory.
