This week, the spotlight is on the Chapel Hill-Carrboro City School Board. Board members meet Thursday with a packed agenda, led by a possible vote to approve a set of recommendations to address the district’s ongoing bus driver shortage. But that’s only the beginning: in addition, board members will vote on a 10-year capital investment plan; they’ll hold a work session on next year’s budget; and they’ll consider a new policy on class rankings, trying to address a spike in competitiveness that’s altered students’ educational choices and affected mental wellbeing.

Here’s a rundown of local government meetings this week in Durham, Orange, and Chatham Counties.

Orange County

The Hillsborough Board of Commissioners kick off the week with a meeting at 7 p.m. Monday, March 13. Commissioners will consider a rezoning proposal on Orange Grove Road and receive an annual report from the Orange County Partnership to End Homelessness. Get the full agenda here.

Orange County Commissioners and the Carrboro Town Council both meet (separately) at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, March 14. Both boards will hold a work session to discuss appointments to various boards and commissions, though Carrboro will also consider consolidating some boards and adjusting rules to allow for easier participation. Carrboro’s agenda also includes a discussion of recommendations from a recent study of downtown parking.

The Chapel Hill Town Council meets Wednesday, March 15, at 6:30 p.m. in the Chapel Hill Public Library. Council members will discuss next year’s budget and provide feedback for staff to develop a final budget proposal; they’ll also receive an update from UNC Health Care on development plans at Eastowne. And the Chapel Hill-Carrboro City School Board meets Thursday, March 16, at 6 p.m. in the Southern Human Services Center. The meeting will begin with a public hearing on next year’s budget and the 2024-34 capital investment plan, after which the board will vote on the capital investment plan and hold a work session on the budget. Board members will also consider changing the district’s policy on class rankings – and perhaps most notably, the board will also consider adopting a set of recommendations to address the district’s bus driver shortage. Those recommendations include increased wages, more hiring flexibility, and some consolidated bus stops. Click here for the full agenda.
