Budget season continues this week, as the Chapel Hill Town Council and the Durham City Council may become the first local boards to approve their 2025 budget plans. Beyond that: the Chapel Hill-Carrboro school board will consider a controversial change to the high school scheduling model; the Carrboro Town Council will get the results of a community survey; and Orange County Commissioners will bid farewell to outgoing county manager Bonnie Hammersley (though she’s not actually stepping down until July).

Here’s a rundown of local government meetings this week in Durham, Orange, and Chatham Counties.

Orange County

The Hillsborough Board of Commissioners is holding a budget workshop at 7 p.m. Monday, June 3. Click here for the full agenda, which will focus on general and stormwater funds.

The Carrboro Town Council meets twice this week. Their regular meeting is at 7 p.m. Tuesday, June 4; town manager Patrice Toney will present her recommended budget for next year, and the council will get the results of this year’s community survey. Then the council will reconvene at 3 p.m. Friday, June 7, for a special meeting with representatives from El Centro Hispano. Click here for links to both agendas.

Orange County Commissioners also meet twice this week. Their regular meeting is Tuesday, June 4, in the Whitted Building – starting at 6 p.m. with a reception honoring outgoing County Manager Bonnie Hammersley, then continuing at 7:00 with a regular agenda that includes a public hearing on the proposed $300 million school bond that’s slated to go on the ballot this fall. Then commissioners will reconvene for a budget work session on Thursday, June 6, also in the Whitted Building at 7 p.m. Click here for links to both agendas.

The Chapel Hill Town Council meets at 6 p.m. Wednesday, June 5. Council members may vote to approve Town Manager Chris Blue’s recommended budget for next year; they’ll also consider authorizing Blue to move ahead on the development of the Tanyard Branch Trace affordable housing community on Jay Street. Get the full agenda at this link.

And the Chapel Hill-Carrboro City School Board has its regular meeting Thursday, June 6, at 6 p.m. in the Lincoln Center. Tops on the agenda: a possible vote on a proposed new high school scheduling model, which was developed with feedback from staff and parents but has since gotten pushback from others. Superintendent Nyah Hamlett will also provide an update on next year’s budget, as well as possible funds from Orange County’s $300 million bond referendum (if it passes).
