The Durham County School Board is back in session this week, with the staff salary dispute still ongoing but officials optimistic about a possible resolution. That dispute has taken up a lot of public attention recently when it comes to local government, but there are several other key issues on the agenda this week: Orange County Commissioners may vote on a five-year strategic plan, the Chapel Hill Town Council will discuss the ongoing process of rewriting the town’s land use management ordinance, and the Durham City Council will revisit the controversial Shotspotter program.

Here’s a rundown of local government meetings this week in Durham, Orange, and Chatham Counties.

Orange County

Orange County Commissioners meet on Tuesday, February 20, at 7 p.m. in the Southern Human Services Center. Tops on the agenda: commissioners may vote to approve a countywide strategic plan for the next five years. There will also be a public hearing on next year’s transit work program, as well as a discussion of top priorities for this year’s General Assembly session. Get the full agenda at this link.

The Chapel Hill Town Council meets Wednesday, February 21, at 6 p.m. in the Chapel Hill Public Library. Only one item on this week’s agenda: council members will get an update from the planning department on the ongoing process of rewriting the town’s land use management ordinance (LUMO). And the Orange County school board meets Monday, February 19, at 7 p.m. in the Whitted Building, with an agenda that includes a resolution in support of a bond referendum for capital projects, and a discussion of how that money might be spent if voters approve the bond later this year. Get the full agenda here.

Chatham and Durham Counties

Chatham County Commissioners meet Monday, February 19, in the Agriculture & Conference Center. The meeting begins at 2 p.m. with a work session that includes a quarterly budget update; then the board will reconvene at 6 p.m. for a regular session that includes a pair of public hearings on development in Cape Fear Township southeast of Pittsboro. Click here for a link to the agenda.

The Durham City Council meets twice this week. Their first meeting is at 7 p.m. Monday, February 19, with an agenda that includes a possible vote on a resolution urging a ceasefire in Gaza. Then the council will reconvene for a work session at 1 p.m. Thursday, February 22, with an agenda that includes a crime report from the police department, a financial report from the budget department – and a presentation on Shotspotter, a tool designed to help police gather information about incidents involving gunfire. (The city recently wrapped up a one-year trial of the Shotspotter program; Duke University’s Wilson Center has gathered data on its effectiveness.) Click here for links to both agendas.

Finally, the Durham school board meets at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, February 22, with the ongoing salary dispute still tops on the board’s priority list. The full agenda will be posted at this link.
