This series of posts will be made weekly on Chapelboro to help inform our community about local government meetings. All meeting days, locations and times may be subject to change. Check town, county, and school district websites for additional information.
This week, the top agenda item is housing, as the Chapel Hill Town Council holds a work session on the “Complete Community” plan, which would allow for greater density in neighborhood housing development. Elsewhere, Hillsborough officials consider a popular event that may be outgrowing its current space; Orange County Commissioners will discuss capital improvement priorities; and the Orange County school board will vote on a budget.
Here’s a rundown of local government meetings this week in Durham, Orange, and Chatham Counties.
Orange County
The Chapel Hill Town Council is holding a work session at 6:30 p.m. Monday, April 10, in the Chapel Hill Public Library. There’s just one item on the agenda: council members will discuss the “Complete Community” housing proposal, which would amend town regulations to allow for more housing density including duplexes, triplexes, and accessory apartments. (This is a work session, so the Council will not be taking any votes. There will also not be a public comment period at this meeting.)

The Hillsborough Board of Commissioners also meets on Monday, April 10, at 7 p.m. Board members will discuss an upcoming fundraiser event called Flush Fest to support the nonprofit After the Rain; the event is popular but town staff are pushing back against organizers’ request to close a block of Eno Street for the festival. Orange County Commissioners will meet at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, April 11. Like the Chapel Hill Town Council, commissioners have only one agenda item this week: a discussion of County Manager Bonnie Hammersley’s recommended 10-year capital improvement plan. Get the full agenda here.
The Orange County School Board meets Monday, April 10, at 7 p.m. in the Whitted Building. Board members will consider approving the district’s budget proposal for next year, to be sent to Orange County Commissioners. Click here for the full agenda.
And the Chapel Hill-Carrboro City School Board meets Wednesday, April 12, at 6 p.m. in the Southern Human Services Center. Their agenda includes a discussion of class rankings: the board is considering a new policy that would allow students to take pass/fail courses without negatively affecting their class rank – and also phase out the “valedictorian” system in favor of one that awards summa/magna cum laude designations for anyone that exceeds a certain career GPA. Chatham and Durham Counties
The Pittsboro Board of Commissioners meets at 7 p.m. Monday, April 10. On this week’s agenda, commissioners will hold a public hearing on the town’s land use plan; they’ll also consider approving a new ordinance that would update the town’s System Development Fee – which attempts to recoup from developers the cost of providing town services to new developments. Get the full agenda here.
Durham County Commissioners have back-to-back meetings this week. First, the board will convene at 7 p.m. on Monday, April 10; their top agenda item is a public hearing on the county’s stormwater ordinance. Then, the board will meet briefly with the Durham City Council at 9 a.m. on Tuesday, April 11. Get links to both agendas here.
