This series of posts will be made weekly on Chapelboro to help inform our community about local government meetings. All meeting days, locations and times may be subject to change. Check town, county, and school district websites for additional information.

This week is a busy one for local government, as elected officials consider big steps to address long-simmering issues. In Carrboro, the Town Council will hear a proposal to build a three-story commercial/retail building on the corner of Greensboro and Weaver Streets, on a lot in the heart of downtown that’s sat vacant for more than a decade. In Chapel Hill, the Town Council will hear plans for a new apartment building downtown, plus the proposed redevelopment at 828 MLK Boulevard, currently the home of the town’s police headquarters. And Orange County Commissioners will vote on a proposal that could extend broadband service to thousands of rural homes.

Here’s a rundown of local government meetings this week in Durham, Orange, and Chatham Counties.

Orange County

The Hillsborough Board of Commissioners kicks off the week with a work session Monday, April 25, at 7 p.m. in Town Hall Annex. Board members will discuss the town’s 15-year Utilities Capital Improvement Project plan and a draft of guiding principles for affordable housing, and they’ll continue a discussion of the Mayor’s Task Force on Re-Imagining Public Safety. The Carrboro Town Council has a packed agenda for its meeting Tuesday, April 26, at 7 p.m. in Town Hall. Tops on the list is that plan for development at the corner of Weaver and Greensboro; the council will hold a public hearing on that proposal, to give residents a chance to weigh in. Council members will also hear results of a downtown parking study, and consider a proposed agreement with Fitch Lumber to provide temporary public parking while the 203 S. Greensboro project is under construction. Get the full agenda at this link.

The Chapel Hill Town Council meets twice this week. First, council members meet in closed session Monday, April 25, at 7 p.m., to discuss an undisclosed personnel matter. Then the council will hold its regular weekly meeting virtually on Wednesday, April 27, also at 7 p.m. There, council members will review the concept plan for 828 MLK Boulevard; they’ll also open a hearing on a conditional zoning application for a 7-story apartment building on the corner of Rosemary and Columbia.

Orange County Commissioners have two meetings this week, beginning Tuesday, April 26, at 7 p.m. in the Whitted Building in Hillsborough. Commissioners will vote to approve a development agreement with North State Communications to extend broadband to about 10,000 new locations in rural Orange County over the next two years. Commissioner Sally Greene tweeted that the plan would allocate $10 million in federal COVID relief funds to cover part of the project’s $45 million cost. Click here for the full agenda.

Then, County Commissioners will meet jointly with the Chapel Hill-Carrboro and Orange County School Boards on Thursday, April 28, at 7 p.m. in the Whitted Building in Hillsborough. Officials will discuss school safety, mental health, teacher retention & recruitment, and human & community services. Get the agenda at this link.

In addition to their joint meeting with county commissioners, both school boards will also meet separately this week. The Orange County School Board meets Monday at 6:30 p.m. in the Whitted Building; then the Chapel Hill-Carrboro City School Board meets virtually at 6:30 p.m on Tuesday, April 26. There’s only one agenda item for CHCCS: board members will consider designating May 17 as a remote-learning day, due to the use of schools as Election Day polling sites.
