Hillsborough mayor pro tem Jenn Weaver will run for mayor this fall. She made the announcement in a posting in the News of Orange on Wednesday.
Current Mayor Tom Stevens announced last week that he would not seek an eighth term in this November’s election, and he told WCHL’s Aaron Keck on Monday that it was his understanding Weaver was “strongly considering” running to replace him, adding he felt “she would be an outstanding choice.”
In her announcement, Weaver wrote that what makes Hillsborough a “great place to live” is the people.
“In Hillsborough, we are descendants of indigenous people who lived in this area long before colonial settlers arrived; we are the descendants of those settlers; we are descendants of enslaved people; we are the more recently immigrated and thriving Latinx community; we are all sorts of people from all walks of life who one way or another ended up in this unique place.”
But she said the town is at an “interesting point” dealing with varying challenges, including affordable housing, maintaining the town’s infrastructure and growing while ensuring all community members benefit from that growth.
“I believe Hillsborough is headed in the right direction, but we don’t want to leave anyone behind. I am Jenn Weaver, and I’m running for mayor. I look forward to making every effort to earn your vote.”
