To help promote visiting its downtown over the winter holidays, the Town of Chapel Hill recently shared details for a gift to motorists in the community.

The local government’s parking department shared that town-owned parking decks and lots will not charge any parking fees over the weekends during December. The change, which Chapel Hill traditionally institutes to encourage visiting local businesses and buying local products, will be in effect for five weekends this year.

The implementation of free weekend parking comes as the town also prepares for the return of its annual holiday parade on Saturday, December 3. The event, which is also in partnership with the Carrboro community, will start at 10:30 a.m. on East Franklin Street and proceed west.

Town-owned parking decks downtown include the Wallace Parking Deck on East Rosemary Street and the 140 West Deck on West Franklin Street. There are also nine public parking lots owned by Chapel Hill:

  • 104 West Rosemary Street Lot
  • 415 West Franklin Street Lot
  • 427 West Franklin Street Lot
  • Mallette Street Lot
  • North Columbia Lot
  • Rosemary/Sunset Lot
  • South Graham Street Lot
  • Courtyard Lot
  • West Franklin/Basnight Lot

The typical rate of parking for Chapel Hill’s decks and lots is $1.50 per hour. The town’s parking department similarly waives parking fees for weekends in the month of July as well.
