Chatham 250, a celebration of Chatham County’s 250 years of history, is wrapping up this weekend. Having started in April of this year, the county will conclude its six-month-long celebration with a fireworks show.

The Chatham 250 Grand Finale Fireworks Display will be held Saturday, November 13 at 6:30 p.m. in Downtown Siler City. Seating and parking will be available along N. Chatham Ave and 3rd Street.

Chatham County Commissioner spoke with 97.9 The Hill about the Chatham 250 finale and what the months-long celebrations have meant to her and the community.

“These kinds of celebrations, they seem somewhat innocuous when we’re in the midst of them, but in terms of the history of the place, they matter,” said Howard. “It really matters that what we were doing in 2021 will matter to future generations.”

Other Chatham 250 events held since April have included a sidewalk chalk festival, an agriculture photo contest, a countywide campout, and the opportunity to purchase an Aunt Rachel tree — a rare local variety of apple tree that originated in the county.

Howard said, overall, Chatham 250 has been a chance to celebrate the community’s rich history and every person and place that contributes to it.

“You know, there are parts of Chatham that are highly developed and very much like Orange County and Wake County,” the county commissioner said. “And then there are rural, pastoral, beautiful parts of Chatham County that provide so much of benefit to the rest of us that we want to preserve. So for me, it’s just been a great opportunity to highlight and reflect on how rich a culture and a community we are because of our diversity.”
