****UPDATE: The boil water advisory has been lifted as of 3:15 Thursday afternoon.****

Certain residents in Hillsborough were advised on Wednesday by town officials to boil all water for human consumption until further notice.

The advisory came after a construction accident by a private contractor may have altered the pressure in the water distribution system.

That accident occurred at noon on Wednesday when a one-inch service line was pulled from a water main near Orange High School Road.

Repairs to the line were completed, but utilities crews were unable to turn off the water supply in the process.

According to the advisory, the potential for back-siphonage and bacteria introduction exists in water systems with low pressure.

Customers near the following roads are advised to boil their water while bacteriological testing is underway:

  • North English Hill Lane
  • US 70 between Orange High School Road and Scotswood Boulevard
  • Ann Road
  • Gwen Road
  • Joyce Road
  • Orange High School Road

The advisory states that “the town will notify customers when the advisory has been rescinded,” with test results expected on Thursday.
