Today, April 22, is Earth Day. People around the world are observing this year’s Earth Day under the theme “Invest In Our Planet.”
Locally, organizations are celebrating with parades, volunteering and other green thumb events for the community. Read below to see what events you can get involved with in Carrboro, Chapel Hill, Durham and Hillsborough.
Carrboro
Earth Day Seedlings Giveaway and Poetry Event (April 22, 8:15 to 12:00 pm)
Head on over to the Carrboro Farmers Market and try your hand at writing poetry. Each participant will be able to contribute one line of poetry that will be compiled into a community poem by Carrboro Poet Laureate Liza Wolff-Francis and Carrboro Poet Council Member Susan Spalt. Keep Carrboro Beautiful Volunteer Day (April 22, 9:00 to 11:30 am)
Gather up your gloves to help clean up the Town of Carrboro and local streams. Volunteers will be provided cleaning supplies and the event is open to all ages, including youth and scout groups. Participants will first meet at the Carrboro Century Center at 9:00 am. Register for this event by calling 919-918-7392 or online.
Celebrate Our Earth Day (April 22, 3:30 to 6:00 pm)
UPDATE: This event has been rescheduled due to inclement weather. It will now take place on April 30.
Learn about sustainability and enjoy an Earth Day parade at the Town of Carrboro’s Earth Day Celebration. Participants can visit tables to learn more about Carrboro’s Community Climate Action initiatives, composting, EV vehicles and more. There will also be food trucks and a free book giveaway. Chapel Hill
Haiti Benefit Earth Day Festival (April 22, 12:00 to 5:00 pm)
Enjoy live music, Haitian food and artwork at the Haiti Benefit Earth Day Festival at UNC Farm. Artists include Taxicab Preacher, the Marigold Collective and Shades of Blue. Visitors can also learn more about sustainable reforestation and water projects in Haiti by the nonprofit Two Mules. Learn more about this event here.
Durham
Earth Day Festival (April 23, 12:00 to 5:00 pm)
On Sunday, head over to Durham’s Earth Day Festival to shop for sustainable crafts, test ride electric bikes and enjoy an Earth Day parade. Other activities include free document shredding, a book giveaway and a family fun zone. There will also be food from local vendors available for purchase. Click here for more details.

Earth Month Last Friday & Art Walk (April 28, 6:00 to 8:00 pm)
Continue celebrating the Earth next week in Downtown Hillsborough. Experience a Living Arts Collective drum circle, Roaming Poets, visual arts exhibitions and more. This event will also include Orange County’s Earth Evening, where participants can engage in hands-on activities. Learn more about this event here.
