Carrboro Town Council member Barbara Foushee and Chapel Hill Town Council member Karen Stegman each announced their plans to run for re-election on Saturday.

Foushee, who is also the mayor pro tem for the Town of Carrboro, will seek her second term on the council after having been elected in 2017.

“It has been an honor and a privilege to serve the Carrboro community for the past [three and a half] years,” said Foushee in a release, “and I look forward to doing more if re-elected. I want to keep a seat at the table.”

Beyond her professional work as a senior technologist in a nearby molecular oncology laboratory, Foushee has served on several town and community boards. The longtime resident said her campaign platform continues to focus on expanding housing opportunities, improving equal access for all community members and supporting locally-run businesses.

“A lot has been accomplished, but we can do more as I continue to hear from community members about ongoing concerns and ways that we can improve our community,” Foushee said. “Ranking high on the list are racial equity, a comprehensive plan, inclusive climate change mitigation and long- and short-term COVID-19 recovery efforts, just to name a few. At the core of my service are people, and my service is certainly guided by hearing community voices.”

Stegman is also seeking a second term, after having been elected to the Chapel Hill Town Council in 2017. She announced her re-election campaign with an event for supporters at Italian Pizzeria III on Saturday.

In a release about her campaign, Stegman said she is honored to serve the Chapel Hill community and believes this next step in the response to the COVID-19 pandemic is crucial for the region.

“I am so proud that our residents came together to respond effectively to COVID-19, resulting in low infection rates and a high proportion of folks vaccinated,” said Stegman. “Because of this response, we are now able to begin re-opening. We must continue this momentum to enable Chapel Hill to build back better than ever.”

A Chapel Hill native, Stegman also works as the Director of Business Development at IntraHealth International, a global nonprofit that aids people who have no access to affordable health care. She said her campaign platform for re-election includes advocating for increased investment in affordable housing, proactively responding to climate change, revitalizing downtown Chapel Hill and more.
