Crescent Magnolia in Hillsborough recently won the 2020 Housing North Carolina Award for Home Ownership Development from the North Carolina Housing Finance Agency.
In September of 2019, Habitat for Humanity of Orange County held a ribbon-cutting ceremony of a new affordable housing community for seniors. The Crescent Magnolia community in Hillsborough was the first in the nation built by Habitat strictly to improve affordable home ownership for residents 55 years-old and older.
Now, just over a year later, Crescent Magnolia has received an award, recognizing the impact it has had on the community.
For more than three decades, the annual Housing North Carolina Awards have honored the best in affordable housing development. Recognition is given in the following categories: Home Ownership Impact, Rental Development, and Supportive Housing.
The Town of Hillsborough, Orange County, and Habitat for Humanity of Orange County were all recognized with plaques for their roles in supporting these residences for people who are 55 or older and in need of affordable housing.
According the 2018 Senior Housing Report, residents over the age of 65 are the most cost-burdened age group in the county. It’s one of the main reasons Habitat for Humanity and Blue Cross Blue Shield partnered to create the senior living accommodation.
Hillsborough Mayor Jenn Weaver said she is so happy to have Crescent Magnolia, and all the Habitat homeowners in Hillsborough, as part of the community.
“The whole model is something that was very new for Habitat and it’s right there in Waterstone and it’s just been a real success,” Weaver said. “We could not be more tickled to receive this award with those other partners.”
According to the town, Crescent Magnolia offers 24 one-story attached housing units for seniors who meet certain income requirements. The housing units range from 576 to 782 square feet and cost about $150,000 dollars. The units have senior-friendly features including wide doorways to accommodate wheelchairs, zero-step entry to the homes, lower cabinets, and walk-in showers.
