The UNC Police Department shared details Wednesday afternoon about an incident that may have frightened campus community members at Bojangles and along South Road.

An Alert Carolina message said a 911 call was received just before 9 a.m., saying a person was threatening employees at the restaurant in the Carolina Union with a knife. The individual then left the building and proceeded to threaten a Town of Chapel Hill bus driver.

UNC Police officers then confronted the person on South Road, according to the Alert Carolina. The individual was immediately arrested and ultimately transported to the Orange County Detention Center. No one was injured as a result of the threats, police said on Wednesday.

“The officers resolved this incident quickly, preventing an ongoing threat to the campus community,” read the Alert Carolina. University officials also clarified that if the armed individual had not been “apprehended immediately,” then public safety would have started the sirens on campus and an Alert Carolina message would have been issued to warn the campus community at the time.

UNC Vice Chancellor of Institutional Integrity and Risk Management George Battle issued a brief statement following the Alert Carolina message.

“Thanks to the fast thinking of the person who called 911,” he said, “the UNC Police officers responded quickly and apprehended this individual before the situation could escalate. We are grateful to our officers on the ground for mitigating the threat. This is an example of our safety systems working.”

UNC Police reminded students, faculty and staff in its alert that the department is available 24 hours a day by calling 911 or using the 919-962-8100 number for non-emergencies.
