The Carrboro Police Department charged a juvenile suspect on Thursday based on its investigation into a bomb threat made the day before against Carrboro High School.
In a release issued by the department, investigators said the suspect who allegedly sent an email making “a threat regarding an explosive device” to Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools is a Carrboro High School Student. The person faces one charge of making a false report concerning a destructive device — which is a Class H felony.
Based on state law, Carrboro Police did not publicly identify the suspect because they are under the age of 18. No additional information about their identity will be released, according the department, but police submitted a juvenile petition to the North Carolina Department of Public Safety.
CHCCS staff reportedly received the bomb threat over email around 9 a.m. on Wednesday, which triggered the district and Carrboro Police to begin evacuating students and staff around 10 a.m. After those Carrboro High community members were bused away from campus, Carrboro Police searched the school building for any destructive device and ultimately found “no suspicious items.”
CHCCS officials confirmed to Chapelboro that Carrboro High School conducted normal operations on Thursday morning.
Despite Carrboro authorities identifying a suspect, Thursday’s release said the investigation into the incident is ongoing. Police encouraged anyone with additional information about the bomb threat to call Lt. Trey Kennedy of the Carrboro Police Department at 919-918-7412, the Chapel Hill-Carrboro-UNC CrimeStoppers hotline at 919-942-7515, or the CHCCS tipline at 844-572-9669.
