The Chapel Hill Police Department is seeking information on suspects in a theft from a hotel parking lot during the early hours of Tuesday morning, which included one person pointing a gun at a victim.

A release on Wednesday afternoon said investigators are looking for three people believed to have stolen tools from a van in the parking lot of a hotel in the 5600 block of Fordham Boulevard, which Google Maps indicates is the Red Roof Inn.

A security camera captured video of the suspects arriving to the hotel around 1:30 a.m. and broke into a parked van. As they began taking things, police say the owner of the van confronted the suspects from a second-floor balcony. One of the trio, whose faces were reportedly covered, then pointed a gun at the victim while the other suspects continued taking items.

Once the trio left the scene, the van owner eventually reported it was tools that were stolen. Chapel Hill Police said the victim was not physically harmed in the incident.

Wednesday’s release described the vehicle used by the trio of suspects as a red Ford pickup truck with a black cover for its bed. There was no information given for which direction the suspects drove after the theft.

Chapel Hill Police said in its release Wednesday that any community members who are confronted by someone committing a crime while armed with a weapon should not engage. Instead, the department suggests gathering a detailed description of the suspect to share with investigators.
