UPDATE: Chapel Hill Police issued an alert on Monday, June 10, saying Brianna Beasley turned herself into authorities. She is formally charged with felony hit and run and unsafe movement.

Below is the original story published on June 6.

A vehicle collision injured a bicyclist and led the Chapel Hill Police Department to issue a warrant for a felony hit and run on Thursday.

A release said investigators were seeking the person who struck a bicyclist with their vehicle around 9:55 a.m. while traveling east on West Franklin Street. A department spokesperson said the driver — later identified as 26-year-old Brianna Nicole Beasley — turned onto Kenan Street, but did so in front of a bicyclist traveling in the bike lane, who then hit the vehicle. Beasley initially stopped after the collision, according to police, but then left the scene without providing any personal information.

Chapel Hill Police said the bicyclist suffered non-life-threatening injuries from the crash, but was taken to UNC Hospitals for treatment and no other information on their status was available as of Thursday afternoon.

Photos shared by the police department show screenshots of video footage from Franklin Street. Beasley is believed to be driving a black Honda Pilot with the North Carolina license plate of TFL-4785.

The incident marks the eighth vehicle collision with a bicyclist reported to the town to date, according to Chapel Hill Police. Four of those eight crashes resulted in “evident” injuries, while three others were listed as the riders having “possible injuries.” Additionally, 13 pedestrian-involved crashes have been reported to police so far in 2024.

Chapel Hill Police said Thursday afternoon that anyone with information about the bicyclist-involved crash or Beasley’s location is encouraged to call 911 or contact the department directly at 919-968-2760 during business hours. Additionally, those who wish to remain anonymous can also use the Chapel Hill-Carrboro-UNC CrimeStoppers hotline (919-942-7515) or website to submit tips to investigators.
