UPDATE: As of Monday, December 14, Chapel Hill Police are still searching for suspects in Friday’s carjacking incident. Authorities say the delivery driver is in stable condition. A GoFundMe by community members has since been established to help cover medical bills and other costs.


The Chapel Hill Police Department is investigating an armed carjacking from early Friday morning that left one injured.

A release from the Town of Chapel Hill said officers responded to the 300 block of Umstead Drive in Chapel Hill shortly after 12:45 a.m. following a report of gunshots and the discovery of one victim. Upon arrival, a man was found with multiple gunshot wounds. The town’s release said he was transported to UNC Hospitals for treatment.

The police’s initial investigation indicates the victim is a food delivery driver, according to the town. Authorities believe he was robbed of his vehicle while he was in the area for a delivery.

The Town of Chapel Hill says Chapel Hill Police are actively searching for the stolen vehicle, a green 2004 Toyota Avalon XL. The car has a North Carolina license plate with the tag number HHF-6582.

Anyone who has seen this vehicle or has information regarding Friday’s incident is encouraged to either call the Chapel Hill Police Department at 919-968-2760, the local Crimestoppers number at 919-942-7515 or 911. Anyone with information that leads to an arrest of those responsible for carjacking is eligible for a reward up to $2,000, according to the town government.
