The UNC Class of 2020 had to wait longer than most for a commencement ceremony, but their keynote speaker may make it all worth it.

The university announced Friday that Roy Williams, the Hall of Fame men’s basketball head coach who retired in April, will deliver an address to the Class of 2020 at their commencement, to be held Sunday, October 10 in Kenan Stadium. The original commencement for the class had been postponed due to the pandemic.

“Members of the Class of 2020 have had to wait a year and a half to celebrate their graduation together, and we want to make sure their ceremony is extra special,” said UNC Chancellor Kevin Guskiewicz in a statement. “Coach Williams is an inspiration on and off the court, and his love for Carolina is unmatched. I know he will provide sound wisdom and share his passion for Carolina with our graduates.”

The ceremony will cap a three-day celebration of the Class of 2020, starting with a Bell Tower Climb and Welcome Back festivities on Franklin Street that Friday. On Saturday, UNC football hosts Florida State in Kenan Stadium. That game will be promoted as “Class of 2020 Day.”

Though tickets for the football game have sold out, graduates can still register for the commencement ceremony until September 24.
