COVID-19 vaccination is in its early stages across the country, with health care systems and local health departments the primary coordinators for administering doses. But soon, a popular grocery store chain in North Carolina aims to join the cause.
Leadership for Harris Teeter, the grocery store headquartered in Matthews, North Carolina, announced plans on Wednesday to vaccinate people through its 211 pharmacies once it’s approved to do so. The chain will administer vaccines only to those who are deemed eligible by state and federal government guidelines, according to a release, and will use an appointment-based system while supplies last.
“Harris Teeter’s trusted Pharmacists remain committed to helping our patients and associates live healthier lives,” said Harris Teeter Communication Manager Danna Robinson. “Our teams are working tirelessly to build a seamless process for patients to check vaccine availability and eligibility, schedule their appointments and ask questions about the vaccination process.”
Currently, those eligible to receive shots are in Phase 1 and 2, which includes all healthcare workers, long-term care facility residents and staff, and adults aged 65 and up. As of Friday, North Carolina’s Department of Health and Human Services reports more than 76,000 people have received second doses of coronavirus vaccines across the state, with 424,274 people having received their first doses. The U.S. Census Bureau estimates North Carolina’s population in 2019 was nearly 10.5 million residents.
In its release, Harris Teeter said those who make appointments in to receive the vaccine at their pharmacies will need to provide a valid driver’s license or government issued identification card. Patients are also encouraged to bring their health insurance cards to their appointment, if applicable.
While North Carolina-based Harris Teeters are not yet approved to begin administering vaccines, South Carolina locations are listed as having limited supplies available by appointment. The full list of states where Harris Teeter will make vaccine appointments available can be found here.
There are three Harris Teeter Pharmacy locations in Orange County and one in Chatham County, with addresses at South Estes Drive, Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard, West Barbee Chapel Road and Chatham Downs Drive.
