A drive-thru COVID-19 testing facility has opened in Durham County, with free tests for those who meet qualifications.
The facility, located in the parking lot of a former pharmacy store at 3798 Guess Road in Durham, began operation on Friday. It’s one of many drive-thru testing sites the state Department of Health and Human Services aims to open across North Carolina in partnership with Walgreens Pharmacy.
According to Durham County Public Health, the tests are by appointment only and people must fill out an online form to find whether they qualify for one of the free tests. The main qualifications are for the applicant to be 18+ years-old and to be symptomatic but not experiencing severe symptoms, like a 102 degree fever or continuous chest pain.
Healthcare workers and first responders can apply for the free tests whether or not they are experiencing COVID-19 symptoms.
Applicants must also agree to have their info shared with state and federal public health officials, an important step for processing any test results.
If contacted about the form and informed of an appointment, applicants can drive to the Guess Road facility where pharmacists will walk them through self-administering the test. The drivers remain in the vehicles at all times.
