****UPDATE****

Four cases of coronavirus have been confirmed in The Laurels of Chatham.

In a release on Thursday, the Chatham County Public Health Department said it has been working with the nursing facility to identify and test and residents or staff members who were in close contact with those who tested positive or showed symptoms of COVID-19.

As of Thursday afternoon, there are 24 reported cases of coronavirus in Chatham County.

A senior care facility in Chatham County said on Tuesday it has been a source of numerous positive cases of coronavirus in the county.

The Chatham News + Record reports The Laurels of Chatham, a care facility located in Pittsboro, released a statement confirming it has several cases there. Regional Director of Operations of the Laurel Health Care Company Rob Peck said the senior care center has been implementing and acting on guidance from health agencies since late February. He said the impacted resident is receiving treatment at a local hospital, while affected staff are being treated off-site and will not be returning to work until cleared to do so.

“As the safety and well-being of our residents, employees, visitors and surrounding community is our top priority,” said Peck in the statement, “we are doing everything we can to limit the spread of the virus.”

Chatham County had the second confirmed case of COVID-19 in the state but has since seen a slower spread. On Tuesday, the state’s health department reported 21 cases in the county.
