Two Chapel Hill residents saved a young girl from drowning on Saturday, May 19, per a story from the Town of Chapel Hill.
According to the story, Savannah Jastram and Norman Picard noticed activity at the University Garden Apartments pool around 9:15pm. Picard said two young girls were in the pool area, one was sitting on the edge while the other was bobbing in the water.
When he noticed the girl in the pool go under, Picard and Jastram rushed to help.
After Picard pulled the girl from the pool, Jastram delivered CPR and the pair called 911. After chest compression and mouth-to-mouth, the girl began breathing again.
Chapel Hill Police and Fire departments arrived shortly afterwards, along with emergency services. The girl was transported to UNC Hospitals, where she made a full recovery.
Picard and Jastram were presented with challenge coins by Fire Chief Matthew Sullivan and Assistant Chief of Police Celisa Lehew earlier this week. The coins are normally reserved for sworn public safety officials.
“There’s no doubt in my mind that you saved that little girl’s life,” Chief Sullivan told the pair. “It’s incredible what you all did to take the initiative.”
