University Place will be among the businesses to reopen as the rest of North Carolina begins its Phase 1 this weekend.

The shopping center will be opening in a limited capacity starting Saturday, May 9, at 10:30 a.m., with some businesses still remaining closed due to Governor Roy Cooper’s executive order. Some businesses with interior entrances will be reopening, while those previously deemed essential services, like Harris Teeter, AT&T, Verizon, Chapel Hill Tire and SunTrust bank, will continue to operate on their current schedules.

Restaurants will continue to be exclusively takeout or delivery only, but Alfredo’s Pizza Villa and Chick-Fil-A will now be accessible from inside the mall. Businesses like the Planet Fitness gym, the Silverspot movie theater and nail salons will remain closed as part of the executive order. Cooper has indicated such businesses will be part of the Phase 2 of reopening.

In addition to limited hours and capacity, social distancing of shoppers and business owners will be “strictly enforced,” according to mall management. Face masks and gloves are a requirement for security and maintenance teams, while face coverings are strongly suggested for shoppers. Any food taken out from restaurants will not be allowed to be eaten in any of the mall’s common areas or patios, with seats and benches being either removed or taped off.

University Place management also said it will be following state recommendations and will require all visitors to be entering purely for shopping purposes, meaning patrons cannot visit just to walk around the mall. Additionally, some areas will have restricted access due to ongoing renovations.

Public restrooms and water fountains will also not be in service during this time.

University Place hours are Mondays through Saturdays from 10:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. and 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Sundays during this period, according to management.

WCHL moved its studios to University Place in October 2016.
