H&H Bagels, a popular chain of restaurants based out of New York, has completed construction at its Chapel Hill location at University Place and is planning a mid-January grand opening.
After an early December target date was missed, the business’ website and listing on Google Maps indicates the breakfast restaurant aims to open on Thursday, Jan. 15. Axios originally reported on H&H’s announcement of a Chapel Hill location at 239 S. Estes Dr., Suite 101 in August.

“We’re incredibly excited to join the Chapel Hill community,” said Jay Rushin, CEO of H&H Bagels in a release shared with Chapelboro. “This will be the first of many North Carolina locations for our phenomenal franchise owners, Michael and Amanda Klein. “We can’t wait to share our NYC bagels with the people in the Triangle and beyond.”
H&H Bagels will operate from 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily. It will feature a similar menu to currently operating locations, with both bagel sandwiches and individual bagels being sold. There will also be catering options available to customers who’d like to order by the dozen. The restaurant features both an indoor dining area and an outdoor patio.
Most of the chain’s locations are in its hometown of New York City, as well as southern California and Florida. The Chapel Hill location will be H&H Bagels’ first in North Carolina, with the News & Observer reporting the restaurant plans to open four other franchises in the state. The franchise will be owned and operated by New York couple Michael and Amanda Klein, who recently moved to N.C. They will also own an additional five planned locations in the state.
H&H Bagels is located alongside other new University Place businesses on the east end of the property, where part of the mall building was demolished in March 2023 to make way for more storefronts. Some of the new businesses already open in the buildings around H&H Bagels’ space include the emergency veterinarian VEG ER, the sauna studio SWTHZ and WakeMed MyCare 365.
On opening day, H&H will give the first 250 customers tote bags containing gift cards with values ranging from $5-$100.
