Durham-based Guglhupf Bakery, Café & Restaurant officially opened a retail bake shop in Chapel Hill on Tuesday.
The 1,250-square-foot space in Eastgate Shopping Center has been the long-announced destination of expansion plans for the award-winning bakery. Guglhupf said last December that it would be opening a new location in Eastgate with an anticipated opening in April 2017 but issues delayed the opening until Tuesday.
The opening comes amid a rebranding of the area around Eastgate that was formerly known as the Ephesus-Fordham District, which has now been dubbed the Blue Hill District.
In addition to the staples customers will recognize from the Durham location, the Guglhupf in Eastgate will “carry a small selection of local and regional grocery items that compliment the baked goods and serve coffee,” according to a release.
Claudia Kemmet-Cooper opened Guglhupf’s original location on Durham-Chapel Hill Boulveard in Durham in November 1998. Additional services, including opening a café and restaurant, were incorporated into that location in 2004.
Guglhupf “focuses on modern German cuisine with an inventive approach focused on local, seasonal ingredients and a European twist,” according to its website.
The new Chapel Hill location will be open Tuesday – Saturday from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Sunday from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.
