The empty storefront on 109 East Franklin Street just hosted a pop-up art exhibit for local painter Marie Rossettie last weekend, but this summer it will become an open studio for Orange County artists to show off their work.

The town is running a residency program at the makeshift studio this summer for local artists interested in the space.

Susan Brown, executive director for Chapel Hill Community Arts & Culture, said the space will bring more art downtown while providing local artists with studio and exhibit space.

“[The artists] agree to have open hours so the public can come in, hang out, see them work and talk to them about their work,” Brown said.

For creative Orange County folks interested in residency, the applications are due soon. They must be in by Sunday May 19.

The selected artists will receive a $1,000 stipend and also teach two community workshop courses at the studio or public library.
