A groundbreaking has officially been scheduled for renovations on the new ArtsCenter space in downtown Carrboro. A celebration will take place on Thursday, September 22nd at 4 p.m., after which the work will commence. The event will take place at 400 Roberson Street.

ArtsCenter executive director Jenny Shultz-Thomas, Carrboro mayor Damon Seils and Chapel Hill Town Council member Camille Berry are all scheduled to speak at the event. The groundbreaking will also feature the unveiling of public art signage at the front of the space.

“This unique art piece celebrates The ArtsCenter’s creative community and includes artwork from local community groups and artists of all ages,” read a release from The ArtsCenter.

The groundbreaking marks the beginning of the “Become a Luminary” campaign. Durham artist Eliza Redmann created the campaign, during which patrons can purchase lumens which will be engraved with the donor name and will hang in the front lobby of the new ArtsCenter space.

“The ArtsCenter’s new location will be a landmark of creative expression within walking distance of downtown shops, restaurants, and the new Orange County Library,” the organization’s release read. “This project will thoughtfully repurpose an existing building around the corner from its current location, using sustainable and green design features. The new space allows The ArtsCenter to expand accessibility, both physical and cultural, through construction as well as welcoming programming for diverse learners.”
