Al and Melody Bowers, owners of Al’s Burger Shack and Mel’s Commissary & Catering, announced that they will be opening a neighborhood pub in Governor’s Village this summer. The new restaurant, Al’s Pub Shack, will serve traditional pub food with Al’s own spin on the cuisine.
“We wanted to bring great food and drink in an approachable way to Governor’s Club and this side of Chapel Hill and Chatham County,” said Al Bowers in a release provided to WCHL. “The Pub Shack will be a place to eat a quick bite for lunch, grab drinks with friends, enjoy dinner with the family and everything in between. Think about your favorite pub experiences… we want you to have them here with us.”
Al, who was recently honored as a WCHL Hometown Hero, will continue to serve the food that made him so famous in Chapel Hill at the new location. Burgers and dogs will be featured as well as beer from local breweries will be on tap.
Al’s Pub Shack will open this summer at 50050 Governors Village in Chapel Hill. This will be the fourth location that Al and Melody Bowers will open, joining the Burger Shacks on Franklin Street and in Southern Village and Mel’s Commissary & Catering in Carrboro.

I guess Chapel Hill is now more a state of mind than an actual physical location. Governor’s Village not only isn’t within the Chapel Hill town limits, it isn’t even in Orange County. But I nonetheless wish the owners much success with the new restaurant.
One of the cool things about Chapel Hill is that it extends to 3 counties – Orange, Chatham, and Durham. Governors Village is located in Chapel Hill Chatham County, which is kind of the best of both worlds – close to the heart of Chapel Hill “proper” and all it has to offer, yet with much lower taxes and just outside the hustle and bustle. But most definitely still has a Chapel Hill address. The residents and employees of Chapel Hill Chatham County are very excited for Al to join our growing scene! 🙂
