Duke University administrators have partially lifted a ban on all sorority activities.

The initial suspension came after a new member was hospitalized in critical condition “related to an incident with alcohol,” according to a letter from leaders of Greek life at the university.

The ban was partially lifted after an emergency meeting on Wednesday evening.

Larry Moneta, Duke’s vice president for student affairs, said in a statement following the meeting that chapter leaders and executive council had a “candid and productive conversation focused on steps that can be taken to undermine a social culture, not unique at Duke, that is excessively focused on alcohol use and abuse.”

Moneta went on to say that, “All agreed that what happened last night was unacceptable and that steps must be taken to prevent any similar recurrence.”

Sorority chapter could hold events including study breaks, sisterhood events, chapter meetings and philanthropy/community events after the ban was partially lifted.

Moneta said that further sanctions are expected to be lifted in the near future.
